Go Shannon! - 14th IAAF World Championships 2013 in Moscow
From 10th until 18th of August 2013 Moscow’s Luzhniki Olympic Stadium hosts the 14th World Athletics Championships in Moscow. The city also hosted the 1980 Summer Olympics and the 2006 IAAF World Indoor Championships.
Luzhniki stadium was built in 1955-1956 as the Lenin Central Stadium and was officially opened on 31 July 1956. It was the chief venue for the 1980 Summer Olympics with the spectator capacity being 103,000 at that time. Today, it is the biggest sports stadium in Russia with a total seating capacity is 78,360 seats, all covered and recently upgraded.
Huge banners with the talisman of IAAF World Championships in Moscow 2013 hanging at Luzhniki Stadium from 10th until 18th of August 2013 while the Olympic Stadium hosts the athletics competition. A sparrow was chosen as the talisman of the World Athletics Championships in Moscow in June 2012. The bird has many athlete's qualities, it is fast, light and smart!
On August 14, 2013, my current clients from the USA invited me to come with them to the stadium to support their daughter Shannon Rowbury, who competed in the 5000m preliminary heats. The top 5 runners in each heat would earn a spot in the 5000m final to be contested on August 17, 2013. Shannon easily passed the qualification by coming in 4th in her heat with a time of 15:50.41. During the competition, I was able to sit with Shannon’s wonderful mother and my dear client, Paula Rowbury, who accidently injured her leg two months ago. I learned a lot of new information about track and field competitions and the strategies that athletes use to get through the qualifying rounds. I also was able to meet some of Shannon’s fans who were at the stadium to cheer her on, including her high school coach and his wife.
After watching the qualifying heats, we all exited the stadium together and passed through the exposition area where they were playing popular American and Mexican songs. We couldn’t help but dance together while waving the USA flag. It was fun!
After a day that sparked a new interest in the sport, I was very happy to accept the Rowbury’s offer to come again to Luzhniki stadium on August 17, to watch Shannon compete for a medal in the 5000m final.
Of course, special attention was made by the Russian people for a safe, peaceful and festive atmosphere at the stadium and the whole area of the Luzhniki sport complex.
Go Shannon! Вперед Шеннон!
