Mephisto Gold Nugget
Features: Weight 20,25 g; Assay 919
Origin: found in Kolyma in 1944
Russia's most important gold nuggets are allotted for permanent safe-keeping to Gokhran (the State Precious Metals and Gems Repository) and the most interesting and unusual are kept in glass cases in the Diamond Fund display. Mephisto gold nugget is the smallest nugget and one of the most intriguing specimen on the display. It weighs only 20.25 g (0,71 oz). Such small samples are not usually included in the exhibition, but an exception was made in this case because the profile of Mephisto (Mephistopheles) here seems to have come straight out of Goethe's Faust.
