Bolshoi Theater

The Bolshoi Theater is one of the most popular tourists spots in the whole Moscow. And it's no wonder! Over almost 200 years of its existence Bolshoi Theater has housed countless ballet and opera performances. In the beginning, this building bore the name of Imperial Bolshoi Theatre of Moscow. Designed by Joseph Bov? and opened in 1825, this theater became the main attraction of Moscow. However, it had to be rebuilt in 1856 after the fire and reopened on 20 October 1856, on Tsar Alexander II’s coronation day.

Over the years, Bolshoi Theater has been renovated and rebuilt a number of times to keep it in prestige condition. The last renovation lasted for 6 years, with Bolshoi Theater opening once again on 28th of October 2011. The cost of the renovation was $688 million; however, some officials claim that the cost was as high as $1.1 billion. Among other things, this renovation restored the acoustic properties and Imperial decor of the Bolshoi Theater, truly making it a sight to behold.
