New Year & Christmas
One of the most popular holidays in Russia is celebrating New Year’s Eve. Every year, from the second half of December to the first half of January Moscow streets, squares and buildings of the city becoming really magic like in fairy tale decorated with garlands, Christmas trees and beautiful light installations on New Year’s theme. During the past years, it became popular light tunnels, arches, and canopies, star skies with hundreds of LED lights making festive mood all days and nights for citizens and visitors of the capital of Russia during winter holidays. The Russian Orthodox Church still uses the old Julian calendar, which is why this religious celebration of Orthodox Christmas falls on 7 January in Russia, 13 days after its Western counterpart. So that is why, new year holidays in Russia last quite long, for about 8-10 calendar days, from the December 31st (January 1st) until the January 8th (10th).
