Dormition Cathedral (Assumption Cathedral)
= On the Way to Dormition Cathedral in Winter Twilight =
Winter scene of historical sight and landmark of Vladimir city, the architectural ensemble of the ancient Dormition Cathedral (Cathedral of Assumption of Our Lady) on the way from Sobornaya Square (Cathedral’s Square) in winter twilight, when it started getting darker and street lights were turned on.
In front of the ancient cathedral built of white limestone in 1158-1161 and reconstructed in 1185-1189, stands the impressive 56-meter (184 feet) bell tower decorated with a tall gilded spire. It was constructed in 1810 and connected with the magnificent five-domed cathedral. The church was designed as a sepulcher of grand princes and was dedicated to the holy icon of Vladimir Theotokos, which had been brought as a gift to the city by Andrew the Pious.
