Arkhangelskoye

At the end of 18th century the suburban estate of Arkhangelskoye was the most lavish and celebrated playground for Moscow’s wealthy aristocracy and belonged to Golitsyn’s family (connected with Peter the Great). In 1810, the estate on which had been built a huge palace designed by French architect Charles de Guerne was bought by Prince Nikolay Yusupov (1751-1831), one of the richest men in the country. Thanks to him, the estate entered its golden age and welcomed Russian Emperors as well as aristocracy and high society.

The main palace is an architectural marvel embodying five facedes of Neoclassical design by by French architect Charles de Guerne was constructed by Russian masters in 1786-1790 and contains original painting by Tiepolo, Van Dyck and Boucher. Outside the palace, visitors can stroll along rather dilapidated terraces lined with Neoclassical busts, statues and urns down to the estate’s formal gardens that stretch all the way to the banks of Moskva (Moscow) River.
