The red rose is the most popular of all roses; it is the symbol of love and beauty. There are over 100 species of roses. Flowers of rose are usually large and showy changing colors from white through yellows and reds. The birthplace of the cultivated Rose (Rosa, the family Rosacea) was probably Persia; the largest exporter of roses is considered Netherlands.

Olearius’ Travels in Muscovy, Tartary, and Persia

The first edition of Olearius' account of his travels was published in 1649. The book is opened on the page with the engraving Ride on a Donkey showing a religious procession on Palm Sunday. Adam Olearius (1599-1671) was a German scholar, mathematician, geographer and librarian.
