Portrait of “Unknown Lady” painted by Ivan Nikolaevich Kramskoi in 1883 / Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 75,5 x 99 cm

The “Unknown Lady” is extremely popular work by Ivan Kramskoy (1837-1887), the famous Russian artist, thinker, great organizer of artistic life, critic and teacher. The portrait shows a beautiful woman who challenges social conventions, but herself belongs to a world where warmth and sincerity in human relations have given way to cold calculation and hypocrisy. This picture illustrates the interest felt by Kramskoy and other realists in the fate of ideals in a society which was lacking in them.
