The tradition of decorating the highest military distinctions with precious stones was renewed in the 1940s.  The Marshal’s star is the mark of distinction established in 1940 by the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR for Marshals of the Soviet Union and the smaller star in 1943 for marshals of different types of forces.
