Romanovsky Obelisk

The high obelisk was erected in Alexander Garden in front of the grotto on July 10, 1914, a year after the tercentenary of the Romanov dynasty was celebrated. The monument in honor of the celebration 300th anniversary of the Romanov house was designed by project of architect S.A. Vlasiyev and made of granite from Finland . On its side were listed names all of the Romanov Tsars with coat of arms of the Romanov boyars and double-headed eagle on the top of the obelisk. After October Soviet revolution, in 1918 per Lenin’s directive on Monumental propaganda, bolsheviks removed the imperial eagle and re-carved the monument with a list of 19 socialist and communist philosophers and political leaders, personally approved by Lenin. There was an inscription R.S.F.S.R (Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic) and the political slogan "Workers of the world, unite!" on the bottom part of the obelisk.

In 2013 during the celebrations of the 400th anniversary of the Romanov reign the column was restored to its original look of the 1913 year and returned back to Alexander garden on the day of celebration of National Unity (November 4).
