Serpukhov is an ancient town where the Nara river flows into Oka on its way to join Volga. Under prince Vladimir Khrabry (The Brave), Serpukhov joined with Moscow in the battle against the Tatars at Kulikovo Pole (Field) in 1380. In 1598 Tsar Boris Godunov visited the town in a successful attempt to stave off a Tatar attack and sponsored much new building.

The Road to the Holy Trinity Cathedral

The view of Holy Trinity church of St. Sergius with Nicon chapel from the left. In 1422 St. Sergius was canonized and until next year the first stone temple of the monastery, the Holy Trinity Cathedral, was built (1422-1423).
