Looking to the Moon – The Statue of Yuri Gagarin
«Looking to the Moon – The Statue of Yuri Gagarin»
The monument in honor to the first man in space, Yuri Gagarin, with beautiful moon and night sky. The Russian cosmonaut is commemorated in epic superhero style by a forty-foot tall statue made of titanium that stands atop a towering 90 foot pedestal. It was designed by Pavel Bondarenko and architect Yakov Belopolskiy and erected on Leninsky Prospekt (Avenue) in 1980 right before Summer Olympic Games in Moscow. The modern monument depicts the cosmonaut standing on top of a globe and wearing a spacesuit.
