Angel and Apostle – Exterior Decoration of the Church of the Sign

Fragment of exterior decoration of the unique and only one in Russia baroque church built from 1690 to 1704 in Dubrovitsy by order of Prince Boris Golitsyn, Peter the Great's teacher. The Church of the Theotokos of the Sign was created by the project of Italian architects and richly decorated with figures of saints, apostles, evangelists and angels, contrary to the Orthodox tradition of building that had viewed statuary as potentially idolatrous.
