«Golden Domes of Assumption Cathedral Against the Blue Sky»

View from observation platform near St. Demetrius Cathedral on the shining gilded domes of Dormition (Assumption) Cathedral again the blue sky in summer. The helmet-shaped cupolas topped with Byzantine-style crosses. In Medieval times the helmet reminds Christians that they are in Christ, and the Apostle Paul: “Put on all the weapons of God,” “take the helmet of salvation”.

The church was built in 1158-1161 dominating the ancient Russian city of Vladimir by Grand Prince Andrey Bogolubsky. Originally, it was one dome church, but it got new limestone walls and new 4 corner domes dedicated to four apostles when it was rebuilt after a fire in 1185-1189 by son of Andrey Bolyubsky, Vsevolod the Big Nest.
