Conopy Arches Over The Cross - Holy Trinity St. Sergius Lavra
«Conopy Arches Over The Cross - Holy Trinity St. Sergius Lavra»
During the repair of the porch of the Dormition (Assumption) Cathedral in 1644, a spring was shot up and at the end of 17th century it was built a special chapel named "Chapel-over-the Well". Many of pilgrims were cured by this water, and people took it to the sick to heal them. The colorful tent-like canopy over the cross-shaped fountain, which receives water from the spring, was built in 1872, almost on the middle of the main square of St. Sergius Lavra, not so far from the Chapel-over-the Well. This fountain, of course, works only during summer season and what is why on the moment when this photo was taken it was nobody around. Till this day thousands of pilgrims use this water for cure and consolation in their troubles. If it is interesting for you, I have also several interesting photos, which I took during summer season, showing people trying to get the water from this spring... On the background of this picture you can see the oldest building, the Holy Trinity Church, which was built from white stone in 1422. The original wooden church of the Holy Trinity, built by St. Sergius, was replaced by a white stone church. During the construction of the Trinity Cathedral, the holy relics of St. Sergius were discovered and later they were putted into special gorgeous shrine, which was made in 16th century by order of Tsar Ivan The Terrible. St. Andrei Rublev (famous medieval Russian artist, icon painter) did much of the iconographic work here, including his most famous Holy Trinity icon.
