«Tower of Single-Domed Chapel over the Well (Sergiyev Posad)»

The chapel over the Well was built in front of the majestic Assumption Cathedral on the grounds of Holy-Trinity St. Sergius Lavra at the end of the 17th century over the holy spring, which was discovered during the time when the porch of the cathedral was repaired. Many pilgrims were cured by this water, and people took it to the sick to heal them. The first was a blind monk, whose eyesight returned due to this miracle-working water. With a number of buildings constructed during this period at the monastery, this adorable small chapel was also built in the “Muscovite Baroque” style and richly decorated with bright colors and ornamental details, with twisted columns surrounding the windows and paintings on the walls which imitated colored blocks.

Just like many other churches were built in Muscovite (Moscow) Baroque, this small chapel represents the tiered structure with octagonal shapes in its key elements. The tower ends in the octagonal drum with narrow lantern windows, crowned with a gilded bulbous cupola (dome) and cross. Even the small cupola has facets making its shape octagonal.
