«Eccentric Cupolas of St. Basil's Cathedral on Red Square (Moscow)»

The well-known St. Basil's Cathedral was built on the Red Square in middle of 16th century during the reign of Ivan IV "The Terrible" to commemorate successful military campaign of the first Russia tsar against Tatars and Mongols and taken one of the strongholds of the "Golden Horde", the Khanate of Kazan. Originally, the cathedral was painted white, and the domes were made of tin covered by a layer of fine gold leaf or powder. During the reign of tsar Aleksey Mikhailovich (father of Peter the Great), in the 1670s, the church was revamped, and the gilded domes were replaced with the present-day multicolored onion-shaped domes.
