Bolshie Vyazemy
The main destinations in this settlement located about 40 km west from the kremlin are the beautiful old Church of the Transfiguration (Spasa Preobrazheniya) built in 1590s, and the attractive classical mansion on the Vyazemka River. The church was commissioned by the most powerful boyar in Muscovy, Boris Godunov, who acquired the estate in the late 16th century. The state at Bolshie Vyazemy is remarkable not only for its beautiful architecture but also for the fascinating historical associations. The church and house at various times sheltered the ill-fated Tsar Boris Godunov, Napoleon and his officers at the head of the invading French army, and the remarkable Golitsyn family whose princes owned the property from the time of Peter the Great to the Bolshevik Revolution. The perfectly survived royal church of Transfiguration is rare in the Moscow region concerning its history and antiquity.
