  • Strike / Reconnaissance aircraft Mission: Destruction of attack aircraft carriers, strategic reconnaissance.
  • Chief designer: N.S. Cherniakov
  • Design Bureau: Sukhoi OKB

The aircraft with unique titanium and steel structure. The first aircraft in the world to fly quadruplex redundant 3-axes fly-by-wire system. In the early 1960s Chief Designer P. Sukhoy and N. Chernyakov with their colleagues began the competitive development of a new prototype supersonic carrier-bomber Su-100 “Sotka” (factory designation - T-4). It was necessary to reach the max speed of 3,200 km/h (2,000 mph) and cruising speed of 3,000 km/h (1865 mph) and to provide a long duration flight at these speeds. The Sukhoi T-4 range was to be 6,000 km (3728 mi) with 114,000 kg take - off mass. The crew cabin is not projected but the nose of the 45 m fuselage is of down deflected arrangement. These provide the downward view. The aircraft is powered by four RD-36-4141 turbojets (P. Kolessov Design Office) with 16,000 kg hp afterburning thrust and 10,000 kg hp nominal thrust each. They are of under fuselage arrangement, two in one duct. On August 22, 1972 V. Ilyushin took the aircraft into the air. Ten test flights were performed and the speed gained was M 1.7. But in 1975 the tests and the further development of the aircraft were ceased most probably because of technological difficulties of T-4 (S-100) production. The exhibited aircraft was delivered to the Air Force Museum in 1982.
