To protect the Resurrection monastery founded in 1656 by Patriarch Nikon, the mighty stone walls and towers of the New Jerusalem were built in 1690–1694 by design of Russian prominent architect Yakov Bukhvostov, a key proponent of the Naryshkin Baroque.
