A lot of soldiers perished during bloody wars. Many of their remains could not be identified. The tradition of erecting monuments to the Unknown Soldier to commemorate those who fell on the battlefield and was not identified appears in the 20 century. These memorials symbolize our gratitude and appreciation to those whose names are unknown, but feat of arms are alive.
