«Floating on Moskva River»

Moscow cityscape with the view on boat floating on Moskva River (Moscow River), red brick buildings of chocolate factory "Red October" and monument to Peter the Great from the 40-meter-high observation platform of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior. The picture was taken one year before the famous factory was moved further out of the city center and the old building’s were converted (in 2007) into a luxury entertainment complex including bars, restaurants, clubs, modern galleries and even hotels, residential compound. The huge controversy monument to Peter the Great erected in 1997 is still at the same place (description edited at 2014). During the past 17th years people and authorities offered to relocate the 98-metre-high monument designed by Zurab Tsereteli, but these offers were refused.

Near the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, at the bottom right on this picture you can see unusual fairytale house that was built at the beginning of 20th century in popular at that time Russian style. The famous red brick building decorated with majolica panels was constructed on money of railway engineer Pyotr Pertsov in 1906-1907 as lodging house. The apartment building looks like a terem house with its pointed roofs. The project was realized with the assistance of engineer B. Shaubert using the sketches of artist Sergey Malyutin (1859-1937), a painter, illustrator, master of arts and applied research and a creator of Russian nesting dolls well-known as "Matryoshka". Majolica panels with pagan themes based on the scteches by Malyutin were created by the Stroganov School guild of pottery artists “Murava”. The top (4th) floor in this house became popular avant-garde artists who rented apartments here as studios. After revolution the house of artists that became famous as Parisian Montmartre was nationalized and belongs in present days to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Interesting fact, that in 1923 one of its luxury apartments with 4 big rooms was occupied by Leon Trotsky.
