Heavenly Ceiling

«Heavenly Ceiling»

Interior of the church of the Descent of the Holy Spirit Upon the Apostles built by Pskov craftsmen in 1476. Fascinating view from underneath the church dome and chandelier (panikadilo) of the church’s vaulted ceiling, painted with beautiful frescoes of saints, angels, and apostles.

The church is second only to Trinity Church as the oldest building on the grounds of Holy Trinity St. Sergius Lavra, a high-ranking monastery in Sergiyev Posad. Its interior belongs to later period. On the picture you can see fragment of iconostasis with two top tiers that was carved of rosewood by the Lavra woodcarvers in 1866. The frescoes in the Holy Spirit Church were executed in 1655, but in the middle of the 19th century they were replaced by oil paintings.

Photo #128 taken on February 04, 2014 during countryside tour to Holy Trinity monastery in Sergiev Posad with my dear client from Indonesia, Irena Iskandar & her family, Mugi, Priyanka and Lukman.
