Red Square
The Red Square is a symbol of Russia. In its architectural ensemble it is considered to be one of the most beautiful squares in Europe. Through the ages it changed its name many times and only in the 17th century it received its present name "Krasnaya" - Red, which in old Russian meant - "Beautiful".
It is most remarkable of the Kremlin's towers wich built in 1491 by Italian architect Pietro Antonio Solari. The icon of the Saviour is placed on the Tower wall, that's why it received the name Spasskaya or Saviour in English. The Tower gates, the main gates of the Kremlin, have always been treated with special honour. In the past everybody passing through the gates of Spasskaya Tower had to take off their hats. When Napoleon rode through the gates in 1812 without observing this custom, it's said his horse shied and his hat fell off, confirming the Russian's belief in its miraculous powers. The Tower clock with the bell-sound stroke for the first time in 1625. By the middle of the 19th century the old mechanism went wrong and was replaced by a new one.
