St Basil Cathedral
The Intercession Cathedral on the Moat, which in the last couple of centuries became better know as St. Basil's Cathedral, was built in 1555-1561 by Tsar Ivan IV (the Terrible) in fulfillment of a vow, "because the Lord entrusted him, the sovereign, with the Kingdom of Kazan".

St. Basil's Cathedral (original name "The Cathedral of the Intercession of the Virgin on the Moat") was erected by order of famous Russian Tzar Ivan IV (The Terrible) in 16th century before the conquest of the Kazan, one of the capitals of Tatars and Mongols Kingdom. Design of St. Basi's Cathedral comprises nine individual chapels, each topped with a unique onion dome and each commemorating a victorious assault on the city of Kazan. All these chapels were replaced the former wooden churches, situated on a single foundation. Intercession Cathedral became the symbol of Russian architecture. The building houses the hole relics of two famous Moscow wonderworkers - Basil The Holy Fool (Blessed) and Ivan nicknamed "Big Cup".

Each chapel is different in design and decoration. At the time, this unique cathedral was the tallest building in Moscow. St. Basil's Cathedral was built of brick which was a fairly new construction material at the time. On this photo you can find 4 of 9 amazingly attractive domes of St. Basil's Cathedral.

Names of chapels from left to right:

- Chapel of Holy Trinity (big dome in green and yellow colors)
- Chapel of Three Patriarchs (small dome with tiles in red and dark blue colors
- Chapel of Sants Cyprian and Justina (big dome in blue and white colors)
- Chapel of St. Basil the Holy Fool (small dome with red nibs in green and yellow colors)
