Russian Orthodox Churches
More then 1000 years the Christian faith is in Russia and the architecutre of the Russian Orthodox Churches reflects the Russian national character and soul of Russian people. Russian architecture has been predominantly religious. Churches were for centuries the only buildings to be constructed of stone, and today they are almost the only buildings that remain from its ancient past.
Here is the picture of the Holy Lives-giving Trinity Cathedral which was built in 2004, in honor of the 1,000 year anniversary of the Christening of Russia. I like this impressive cathedral and took already a lot of interesting pictures here, but yesterday, on the way back from airport Domodedevo, it was pretty nice sunny day, almost before sunset, and I decided to stop my car to make several shots again to show you how it looks at winter season.
In spite of it was pretty hard to move with a lot of snow which fell recently, I tried to make something different (if compare with my previous photos of this cathedral) . Of course, the conrast here is not so impressive as like in my previous picture "Blue Domes Under Grey Skies", but anyway it is looks attractive with it's impressive Byzantine style of architecture and gorgeous shining blue domes.
Some history in brief:
The year 988... was a pivotal year in Russian history, for that is when this country adopted Christianity. Prince Vladimir, the sovereign ruler of Olden Russia, was christened in the Crimean town of Hersoness, which in those times belonged to Byzantium. At his decree, all of his subjects, also adopted Christianity. Thus, in the 10th century Kievskaya Rus (Russia, Ukraina) became a country of Orthodox Christians.
