This is the Church of the Sign of the Virgin in the settlement of Dubrovitsy near Moscow, which was built in 1690-1704 on money of Prince Boris Golitsyn* by architects from Switzerland. The legend says that the church was built as a sign of reconciliation between Golitsyn and Peter the Great, and that the tzar even helped to build it. The church exemplifies a style that employs a lavish decor rarely seen, the style known as Moscow baroque, or Naryshkin baroque, after the Naryshkins, the noble family that built most of the churches of this style. Despite their small interior space there is a majesty about these tall and perfectly proportioned churches.
