The Cathedral of the Assumption is the Kremlin's oldest and most important church. It stands on the site of Moscow' s first stone cathedral built by Ivan Kalita In the 14th century. The largest edifice of its time in Russia, the Cathedral of the Dormition was built in 1475-1479 under the supervision of the Italian architect Aristotile Fioravanti after the model of the 12th-century Cathedral of the Dormition in the ancient Russian city of Vladimir. A year after the construction of the cathedral, Moscow became the capital of the Vladimir-Suzdal principality, and later the capital of all Rus. The cathedral's history clearly reflects its important role as Russia's central church for more than 400 years. |
